Imeem is dead

As you know, this website is a final project for my Implementing Web Media class. I have developed this site using many social networks’ APIs. For the audio requirement of theĀ  project, I used Imeem, a music social networking site with a strong community of 16 million users. At the time, it seemed like a very reliable option; one that would not be shut down any time soon. What I originally thought was just a temporary outage of Imeem’s API I have now learned is a permanent one. The recent, and apparently sudden, buyout of Imeem by MySpace has lead to the permanent shutdown of Imeem in its previous form as well as its API. The most tragic aspect of this unfortunate buyout was MySpaces failure to notify Imeem developers before the shutdown. This project’s audio mashup is a very small fish in a sea of many very popular Imeem mashups which are now completely unusable. You can read about the fiasco here: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/12/08/myspace-imeem-api/

I will be spending a great deal of time leading up to the final project’s due date trying to mash together a substitute. If I had been given fair warning of the discontinued API, as one can usually expect from any respected company, I could have been better prepared to redo the functionality on our project. I am asking that you take into consideration this situation if I am unable to create an equal audio mashup in the remaining time, as the Imeem mashup I previously created was working great and met all requirements before all of this happened.

Thanks,

Andrew Hammond
